Corruption In The Educational Sector Deserves Capital Punishment – Sam Amadi

Worried by the dwindling fortunes of Nigeria’s education system, professionals and stakeholders have called on the federal government to urgently take steps in rejuvenating education in the country.

Senior Lecturer and Head of Department, Public and International Law at Baze University, Dr Sam Amadi, led the call during a special radio town hall meeting against corruption, organized by Progressive Impact Organization for Community Development, PRIMORG, with the support of MacArthur Foundation on Thursday in Abuja.
Dr. Amadi alleged that certificate forgery and racketeering is prevalent in Nigeria at a very high level.
He expressed serious concern over the destructive impact of corruption on the educational sector, stressed that mediocrity, poor funding, poor infrastructures, paucity of quality teachers, poor learning environment has crumbled the quality of education, which puts the nation in a position producing individuals, goods and services lacking in quality.

According him, the current state of Nigeria’s education system means the nation cannot boast of quality technicians, good doctors and other professionals needed in a country.
He also lamented that mediocrity has been democratized in Nigeria’s educational system through certificate falsification and racketeering by a good number of citizens, adding that about 50 percent of Nigerians in authority falsified their certificates.

On solution to rebuild Nigeria’s educational sector, Dr Amadi had these to say: “Certificate racketeering should attract capital punishment; federal government should set up a system that inspects integrity and discipline in the educational sector; government should subsidize education for brilliant students from poor backgrounds, while encouraging skilled training.”

The Founder and Executive Director, Centre for Educational Empowerment and Orientation, Davidcrown Oyebisi, bemoaned the use of obsolete teaching tools and lack of training of teachers in Nigeria.

Oyebisi added that it is disheartening that the Welfare of Nigerian teachers’ are not prioritized by the political leadership of the country, past and present, while calling on the federal government to urgently organize national curriculum conference for the nation’s educational sector.

Earlier on, celebrated teacher and a 2019 Integrity Icon, Mrs Kacheilom Bertram Roberts-Ndukwe, revealed that her family background was key to molding her into a person of integrity. She stated that her journey as a person of integrity was not all rosy because she was persecuted and sacked from her former job for frowning at corrupt acts.

Roberts-Ndukwe also stated that the level of damage done on education by corruption was alarming and joined the call for government at all level to urgently do something about it.

On her part, Proprietress of Excellent Kiddies Montessori Academy Bwari, Abuja, Christy Imudia, raised the alarm that parents and guardians are encouraging corruption in public and private schools through bribery.

She decried the level of examination mal-practice in senior secondary classes and stressed that all Nigerians must participate in weeding out corruption in the educational sector.
Towing the same line, a representative of Accountability Lab Nigeria, Prince Chimaraoke Chukwuka said the onus lies on parents to lay the right foundation towards building a good society.
Chukwuka added that parents and guardians must understand that they are responsible for inculcating the right values in their children and wards.


“The first education any child will encounter is from the parent or from the guardian, because at that point the right values are inculcated and it will go on.
“In Accountability Lab, we are trying to see how to put together click of people who are not allowed to compromise standards but do the best they can and ensure quality is served without compromise,” he said.
The PRIMORG’s Radio Town Hall Meeting Against Corruption is aimed at calling the public and government attention to specific issues of corruption in Nigeria.
